Two Mesa police officers shot and killed a suspect Wednesday evening around 9pm.
They were answering a domestic violence call at the Spanish Arcos Apartments in the 200 block of West 10th. A man answered the door to the apartment with a knife and was shot after refusing to drop it.
Mesa police spokesman Detective Steve Berry said police were called to the Spanish Arcos Apartments in the 200 block of West 10th Avenue about 8:40 p.m. because of a reported fight between a man and a woman.
The woman, who had a bloody nose, met officers and directed them to the man’s apartment
When the officers knocked on the man’s door, Berry said, he opened it holding a knife and ignored several orders that he drop the knife.
Berry said it was unclear if the man lunged or moved towards the officers, but both fired at him.
He was pulled outside to a sidewalk for medical attention, but died at the scene.

Police have called off a search that locked down a Chandler neighborhood near Warner and Dobson roads this morning after a man that may have matched the description of the Chandler Rapist was discovered in a home with three children just after their father left for work.
The oldest child, a 15-year-old girl, awoke at 6 a.m. to find a man in their home, police spokesman Sgt. Rick Griner said. The man fled when the girl called police. The girl was not sexually assaulted, police said.
Officers arrived within three minutes and set up a perimeter for nearly three hours, swarming the neighborhood with police, a helicopter and K-9 units, but turned up little, Griner said.
A K-9 did get the man’s scent but was unable to follow it. Griner said the man, who is suspected in several attacks, knows the areas he chooses and has an escape route.
