A bicyclist was in serious condition after getting shot in the face early Tuesday morning in Phoenix.

A 52 year-old man was riding his bike in his neighborhood near the 3600 block of East Sweetwater Avenue when he was shot once in the face around 3 a.m., said Lt. Rich Benson, public information officer for the Phoenix Police Department.

Initially, friends of the bicyclist went to look for him after they noticed he had not returned. The bicyclist had gone to visit other friends.

His friends rushed him to the hospital after the bullet caused massive damage to the left side of his face. He underwent surgery this morning and is said to be in serious condition, Benson said.

The bicyclist’s friends then called Phoenix police when they arrived at the hospital.
