New Times owners arrested on BS charges
Wow.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s office arrested the owners of the alternative Phoenix magazine New Times last night.
They were arrested on the misdemeanor charge of revealing grand jury information. The grand jury information was related to a subpoena issued against the magazine. This original subpoena was raised after the New Times printed an article the County Attorney didn’t appreciate, like publishing Joe Arpaio’s home address. Most legal commentators believe printing this information is protected by the First Amendment.
In the subpoena, the County Attorney has asked for the following:
Information about the visitors to the New Time’s website for the last four years including the following:
* The number of people who viewed each New Time’s article.
* The web addresses visitors were looking at BEFORE they came to the New Time’s website.
* Shopping habits of New Time’s readers.
* A list of every page that viewers have accessed on the website for the last four years.
* All information derived from cookies used by New Time’s readers.
* The date and time of every visit to the New Time’s website in the last four years.
* The type of browser and operating system used by every New Time’s reader.
* The Internet Protocol number of everyone who’s visited the New Time’s website.
