The name of the bar, George and Dragon, comes from a legend
believed to have been brought back from the crusades.
According to the legend, there was a village with a large
pond where lived a dragon. To appease the dragon the villagers gave
the dragon sheep daily. They ran out of sheep began to feed the dragon
with their children, chose by lottery.
Eventually the lottery fell upon the the daughter of the
king. To save his daughter the king offered the villagers all of his
money and half of his kingdom. The villagers refused and the king's
daughter prepared for death.
Of course this is when Saint George arrives. He wounds
the dragon and saves the king's daughter. The now placid dragon is taken
from the pond by the king's daughter. The weak dragon is taken to a
larger city by Saint George and the king's daughter.
The villagers of this city are terrified of the dragon.
Saint George promises the villagers that he would slay the dragon before
their eyes if they converted to Christianity. They did.
